        If you are a fan of organic fruit and vegetables, then you will be greatly encouraged by a press report today that naturally produced strawberries are more nutritious than conventionally produced strawberries that have been sprayed with chemical pesticides.

I don’t know about you but I have always believed that organic fruit and vegetables were better for us in terms of nutrition. A recent study in America comparing organic and conventially grown strawberries has shown that organic strawberries contain high levels of anti-cancer nutrients such as antioxidants that protect against potentially cancer-causing free radicals in our bodies. Not only that but research has shown that organic strawberries taste better and have a better colour.

This report is in contravention to the UK food standards agency which last year caused controversy when it stated that there was no good evidence that organic food was healthier. This American study will be welcomed by the organic growers. Although their produce may be a little more expensive it is obviously worth it from a nutritional point of view.

         Drug companies have spent millions of dollars to try and come up with a drug that kills cancer cells. Whilst some new drugs have been developed, they are hugely expensive and therefore not available to everyone. They also have side effects.

Chemotherapy is the standard treatment for certain types of cancer, yet the results can be as low as 2 or 3% effective and are accompanied by side effects of nausea, wait loss and hair loss. Imagine a natural substance that kills the cancer cells but has no side effects.

Apparently the Amazon Indians have been using such a substance for many years and it is called Graviola. Can you see now why we must not continue to destroy the rain forrests. They say that there is nothing new under the sun and to an extent that is true. We cut down rain forrests to produce products like palm oil for cosmetics.

Is that not a bit sick that we cut down the very forrests that contain trees and plants that produce life saving substances, not to mention the rare animals that we destroy. The problem of course is that natural substances cannot be patented and so no drug company is going to research and market them. Natural health companies will hopefully continue to pursue  research and market these natural substances.

     last time I wrote in my blog about a move to restrict natural health products ( Codex Alimentatius) by governments and the World Trade Organisation.  I mentioned that the Pharmaceutical lobby were pushing for this legislation, and that the remaining natural products after codex Alimentarius would be under the control of some of the major pharmaceutical companies.

Unfortunately the Bad news this week is that the worlds largest drugs maker has just been fined £1.4 billion by US authorities for fraudulently mis-selling its treatments.  How Sick is that? Apparently this organisation were offering kickbacks to doctors, consultants, healthcare administrators and other professionals. Methods included 5 star luxury all expenses paid trips to exotic destinations for them and their families. It gets worse this organisation admits to improperly marketing 13 different medicines.

That means making false claims about their effectiveness for treating certain conditions.  Yet this type of company may if governments and the WTO get their way be dictating exactly what kind of product we can use to treat our medical conditions. I think that we must resist all attempts to restrict our freedom to choose to treat ourselves with herbs/vitamins and mineral supplements as we see fit. Of course they must be manufactured to the highest standards but not by disreputable pharmaceutical companies who are only interested in large profits.

      If you have friends or relatives with cancer or heart disease or even alzheimer’s disease then you need to consider this seriously. Traditional medicine would have us believe that there is no such thing as a panacea or cure all treatment. Can you imagine for a moment if there was a cure for almost all diseases what affect that would have on our health system and on the pharmaceutical industry.
